Carob - The Food of the Egyptian Kings

2 March 2010
Poor ol' Carob powder is overshadowed by raw cacao and not given the credit it so deserves.

The truth is that it really is a superfood because it contains tons of nutrients and is super rich in calcium.  Carob contains twice as much calcium as milk!  Yep you read that right, and to top it off it tastes delicious and is a great addition to desserts and smoothies.

For the full scoop on carob check out our Carob article.

Great news!  You can now get your raw organic carob powder right here at The Raw Greek e-shop.

We stock carob powder in 250g and 500g bags from only £4.00.

Our carob powder is raw (not heated above 200oF like standard health shop carob powder) it comes from Italy and is Certified Organic by the Soil Association.

The Beginning of the Easter Period

14 February 2010
This month marks the beginning of the Easter period for Christians, Catholics and Orthodox religions. Here in Greece a trip to the supermarket will quickly remind you of the Lenten period ahead; the shelves are full of Taramasalata (fish roe dip) and Halva (a sweet made from sesame seeds), which are traditionally eaten on Kathari Defteri (Clean Monday).

The 15th February this year is Clean Monday in Greece and marks the beginning of lent. In Western society people celebrate the beginning of lent by making and eating pancakes. In Greece the emphasis is on the day the fast begins and as usual is celebrated with food. During lent the orthodox tradition is to give up meat, dairy and all animal products for 40 days with the exception of certain days where fish is allowed. One fasts in order to purge the mind and body of sin in preparation for the Holy Communion received during the Easter weekend.

On clean Monday families gather and eat Taramasalata (fish roe dip) and Halva (a sweet made from sesame seeds). The Raw Greek book contains many recipes which are great for the lenten period, it even contains recipes traditionally eaten on Clean Monday such as Taramasalata and Halva. The Raw Greek website also features the unique and delicious raw vegan recipe for Taramasalata which looks just like the traditional dip and even tastes like the real thing. If you haven’t already seen and tried this recipe now is the best time, believe me you wont be disappointed.

Raw Unsalted Kalamata Olives - Coming soon!

27 January 2010
In 2008 during the forest fires in Greece the land from which our Kalamata olives came from was terribly affected.

It has taken us a year to find a new supplier who understands the concept of raw food and is willing to cure their olives without salt.

After a small delay and a lot of patience from our customers we are pleased to annouce that our unsalted Kalamata olives will be back in stock soon.

December 2009

The NEW Raw Greek website is here

15 December 2009
The Raw Greek Website has had a facelift!!!

Our company ethos is the same, we just decided it was time for a change.

Many people are against making new years resolutions because they see them as a waste of time, but for me when I set goals and write them down 9 times of out 10 I will follow them through.

In 2008 I concentrated on myself and my family, I got married, had a baby and became a qualified nutritional therapist.

At the end of 2008 I made a list of new years resolutions and decided that 2009 would be dedicated to The Raw Greek. As a result my website got revamped and I made huge progress on sourcing new products.

By the skin of our teeth the new Raw Greek website skidded sideways into the real world just before the years end.

We’ve worked hard to get The Raw Greek website live before the year ends so we can concentrate on new projects for the new year.

Our new website is jam packed full of insightful information about the raw food diet, new recipes and new products.

Check back regularly to make sure you don’t miss out on special offers and new products that you wont want to miss.
