No chlorine, dyes, colourings or additives of any kind are used in the manufacture of the DivaCup™.
Because the DivaCup™ is reusable, it is very economical and environmentally friendly. It is sanitary, comfortable, reliable and convenient.
Tampons absorb the self cleansing natural fluids which the vagina produces to wash away dead cells and bacteria keeping it clean and moist. The DivaCup™, on the other hand, is non-absorbent and simply collects the menstrual flow, leaving the natural moisture level in the vagina undisturbed.
Disposable tampons and pads dumped into landfills each year not only create billions of tons of disposable waste but also leach chemical additives found in these disposable products into the environment (groundwater, streams and lakes) causing serious pollution and health concerns. Most tampons and pads also contain harmful surfactants, adhesives and additives. In addition, most pads contain polyethylene plastic whose production is a pollutant. Also, dioxin, a known carcinogen, is a by-product of the bleaching process of tampons containing rayon.
The DivaCup™, however, is reusable and made from silicone. This makes it an important, environmentally responsible feminine hygiene choice!
The DivaCup™ is a non-absorbent menstrual cup that is inserted into the vagina and sits at the lower base of the vaginal canal collecting the menstrual flow. It is worn internally, yet because it is soft and smooth, it cannot be felt nor will it leak when inserted properly.
The DivaCup™ holds one full ounce (30 ml) of fluid. The entire female menstrual cycle is on average 3-4 ounces (90-120 ml) most women find that after 12 hours the cup is not even half full.
The DivaCup™ only needs to be emptied 2-3 times per 24 hours a day, depending on ones flow. It can be confidently worn for up to 12 hours, even overnight.
The DivaCup™ is ideal for all activities including swimming, camping, backpacking, and travelling. It is suitable for menstruating women of all ages.
The DivaCup™ also holds market approval by the U.S. FDA and is the only menstrual cup that holds market approval by Health Canada; consequently, it is the only menstrual cup that can be sold in Canada.
The DivaCup™ is available in two models:
Model 1: for women who are under 30 years old who have never had childbirth: vaginally or caesarean.
Model 2: for women who are 30 years old and over and/or for all women who have gone through childbirth: vaginally or caesarean.
The Model 1 cup is 1 11/16" (~4.3 cm) in diameter and the Model 2 cup is 1 13/16" (~4.6 cm) in diameter. Both cups are approximately 2 1/4" (~5.7 cm) in length in the body of the cup, with another 3/8" (~1 cm) stem (2 5/8" total length). The stem may be trimmed to adjust for comfort.
There is a small difference between the two sizes (Model 1 is 1/8" (~0.3 cm) smaller), but it is important to use the recommended sizing to prevent leakage.
We recommend Model 2 if you are 30 or over 30 years old, because as we age, our hips naturally widen and the vaginal muscles lose elasticity. Because the vaginal muscles hold The DivaCup™ in place, it is important to use Model 2 if you are over 30, even if you have not had childbirth.
